Over the past few years, the demand for gigabit-speed connectivity has skyrocketed. From enterprises moving their applications to the public cloud to domestic users demanding high-performance multimedia services, telecommunications providers face increased demand for ultra-fast connectivity that only Fiber to the x (FTTX) can achieve.
That’s why many service providers have been switching from DSL, cable, and other slower connections to fiber and, most recently, to 10-Gbps Point-to-Point (P2P) optical networks. The trend will bring greater efficiency and convenience to the networking environment. In the foreseeable future, we can also expect that 10G optical fiber cable will also play as the basis for supporting the subsequent technologies from Wi-Fi 7 to Wi-Fi 10.

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS NEED TO UP THEIR GAME AND OFFER FASTER FIBER CONNECTIONS
A few years ago, fiber to the home (FTTH) was seen as a complement to traditional broadband technologies (copper-pair or cable technologies) that would be deployed only in certain areas.
Over the past decade, especially in Western Europe, the deployment of FTTH or fiber to the business (FTTB) has accelerated to cover over 200 million households, with an adoption rate of over 40%.
In Spain, for example, over 80% of the population lives in households with FTTH coverage, and in metropolitan areas, nearly 100% of households can opt for the technology. In fact, some operators have stopped offering legacy POTS and DSL connections.
Competition between operators is fierce; offering triple-play services, higher broadband capacity, and lower latency is paramount. Several ISPs already offer combinations of ultra-high–definition IPTV, VoIP telephony, and gigabit-speed Wi-Fi to residential customers. Additionally, many ISPs already offer gigabit fiber connections to home users.
The current pandemic has accelerated the demand for faster connections. As many workers had to leave their offices and work from home, the need for faster connections, especially for intensive applications such as video conferencing, has reached new records.
These are the representative scenes in the new FTTX connection environment where ISPs started to provide the 10Gbps internet service.
AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OPERATORS AND BUSINESSES, THE CTS HES-5106 PROVIDES THE CONNECTIVITY NEEDED FOR 10-GBPS CONNECTIONS
CTS is majoring in P2P technology instead of PON, we believe p2p is much more stable, future-proof, and easier to maintain with the capability to provide higher quality of internet service.
By responding to the trend which keeping close to higher bandwidth and processing capability, the CTS HES-5106SFP+ fulfills the needs of the next stage of FTTH deployment.
From the functional point of view, the HES-5106 is equipped with:
- One LAN port that supports 1G, 2.5G, 5G, and 10G, giving end users flexible options when upgrading their online devices such as Wi-Fi 6 routers. In fact, several chipset manufacturers, including Intel, are rolling out 2.5GbE Ethernet controllers for the next generation of switches and routers.
- Four extra 10/100/1000 LAN ports allow flexible installation scenarios with IPTV, Wi-Fi routers, or wired personal computers.
- In addition, HES-5106 allows flexible configuration networks for businesses, including a 10-Gbps fiber connection to their internal servers using its 10G WAN port and an additional 10-Gbps link to an external ISP.
CTS also focuses on bringing more flexible all-around configuration options and support capabilities. The HES-5106SFP+ supports open-access network functions, including TR-069, 802.1q Tag VLAN, 802.1q QoS, and DHCP snooping.
For ISPs using multicast, functions such as IGMP snooping, IGMP fast leave, and IGMP filtering allows them to deliver high-quality IPTV services.
Network management is critical for ISPs to deliver stable internet service. The HES-5106 functions include DHCP auto-provisioning, power-down trap, dual image, and CLI configuration, among others.
Additionally, to manage the possibility of overheating at full capacity, the HES-5106 features an SFF-8472 diagnostic monitor interface. Operators can read and monitor SFP statuses such as temperature, speed, and voltage for remote diagnosis or troubleshooting.
BEYOND THE PARTS OR FUNCTION: WHAT FACTORS ENABLE US TO BUILD A MORE SATISFYING USER EXPERIENCE?
Furthermore, the usage scenarios are very close to end-users, whether in a home or office space. Therefore, the design points around user comfort are also critical factors. We must reduce the stimulation and interference to users as much as possible while maintaining efficiency.
Therefore, HES-5106 also includes the following designs:
- Cable management: the storage of cables is more smart, and effective in reducing the externally occupied space.
- “Fanless” thermal design: Minimize the noise caused by the heat dissipation process.
- White color appearance: Build the device with a soft look which more suitable to integrate with the In-home environment.
- LED control by software: Basically, restrict the instrument light to a reasonable brightness to avoid unnecessary stimulation to the users.
These features are not only the expectations given by the CTS product development team but also have been successfully introduced in actual cases. The success case of Affärsverken could provide a clear example.
CTS CAN OFFER THE BEST FTTX INTERFACE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR INTERNET SERVICE NEEDS
In general, the HES-5106 not only shows our product performance and design concepts. We’re also looking forward to actively becoming a partner in building a forward-looking Netcom environment.
If you are further interested in switch-based Netcom solutions, whether you require a simple solution to connect existing data centers or deploy Fiber to an entire residential area, CTS can help you upgrade your FTTX solution to the next level.
